Zeiger bill recognizing military service award recipients signed into law

On March 23 the governor signed a bill sponsored by Rep. Hans Zeiger that will allow veterans and current members of the armed forces to purchase a military service award emblem for display on license plates.

House Bill 2312 will allow recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross, Silver Star, and Bronze Star to purchase these special emblems for their license plates, with proceeds going toward a fund in the state Department of Veterans Affairs to honor veterans.

“This law is a small gesture of acknowledgement for those who have protected our freedoms,” said Zeiger, R-Puyallup.

The idea for the legislation came from Ed Porter of Puyallup, a D-Day veteran who served in Patton’s Third Army and earned the Silver Star after risking his life to save a wounded comrade in fighting at Brest, France.

These new emblems will allow us to recognize heroes like Ed Porter,” said Zeiger.

After meeting with Porter, Zeiger had subsequent conversations with veterans organizations, including the American Legion, that led him to introduce the bill.

The law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2013.
