Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I voted “no” on Senate Bill 6239, the bill to redefine marriage. It was not an easy vote. I hope that those who disagree with my vote will at least trust that I was earnest and reasonable in taking it.
Three things seemed important to me about the debate.
First, was the need for civility. I do not doubt the sincerity of people on either side of the debate. I pray that people on the left and people on the right may be friendly with each other in the midst of the ongoing public discussion.
Second, Senate Bill 6239 raises significant concerns about religious liberty. We must guard against any future thing that threatens the freedom of conscience for people of any faith.
Third, the larger opportunity for the renewal of marriage and family is to be found outside of government. It is found in the millions of daily encounters between husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, parents and children, brothers and sisters, grandparents and grandchildren. It is found in the larger web of churches and synagogues, schools and clubs, neighborhoods and circles of friends, all of which exist in some way to support families. In our experiment with self-government, we must give most of our attention to joys and struggles beyond the halls of government.
